Economic historian and social reformer, born in London. He lectured in economic history at Oxford, and also to numerous workers' adult education classes, and undertook social work in the East End of London with Samuel Barnett. He is best known as the coiner of the phrase and author of The Industrial Revolution in England (1884). Toynbee Hall, a university settlement in Whitechapel, London, was founded in his memory in 1885.
