Since 1995 looks to be the year when Internet connections and CD-ROM drives become standard household fixtures, we've decided to devote our March issue to the theme of `Writing on the Information Highway.' We'll interview cyberpunk guru William Gibson, report on an electronic writer's network and how computers are analyzing literature, and cruise the Internet with a dedicated hacker.
April will as always announce the winner of the SmithBooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award, the only major literary prize in which the judges explain exactly why they chose as they did. We'll also run a pre-publication excerpt from Paulette Jiles's North Spirit and profile playwright George F. Walker, and we'll explain everything you ever wanted to know about that hot new academic growth area, "cultural studies."
In May we'll interview Jane Urquhart and profile Steven Heighton, while our Summer issue will spotlight an interview with Courtney Milne as well as bevy of seasonal book reviews. Our May and Summer numbers will also feature a spirited exchange about the ideas of John Ralston Saul, which have generated some very strong positive and negative feelings among our readers.
With all this to look forward to, be sure not to miss this issue's debut of our `Grammar Girl' columnist, Rose Thorne. Thorne can be a bit . prickly about those malefactors who mangle the English language, and we think you'll enjoy watching her weed out the word garden. Just as we'll enjoy bringing you the best of Canadian writing in 1995.
